Money Saving Tips for Home Owners

There are tons of ways to negotiate money during the home buying process. You can negotiate the real estate agent fees or ask for a home buyer rebate, and you have full control over the amount you offer to the seller.

BUT, once you find a real estate agent and purchase your home, homeowner expenses can pile up. Check out the tips below — to save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in day-to-day home-owning life.

  • Combine your cable, Internet and telephone service.
Companies now offer combined services that not only cost less, but offer the convenience of a single bill.

  • Slow down your Internet service.
Unless you work from home and rely on the Internet to do your job, you can likely save $10-$15/month by slowing things down.

  • Send away for rebates for common household items when offered.
Most rebates are advertised and can add up. It may seem silly, but that $30 rebate that comes in the mail a month later will seem like an added bonus.

  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFLs) bulbs.
These bulbs use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer. They do take some getting used to because they are a white light, and they won’t work in every light fixture. But use them where it makes sense and save energy and money. Learn more >>

  • Shut vents in unused rooms.
This is not advisable if you have forced air heating, but shutting vents in unused rooms can save on your heating and cooling bill.

  • Check the insulation in your home.
Extra insulation can easily pay for itself in one or two years, and it helps save the environment, too. Read these FAQ’s about insulation >>

  • Buy energy efficient appliances.
Look for the Energy Star on appliances and consider the annual energy cost before buying. More efficient appliances cost more, but you make up the extra cost and then some over the life of the product.

  • Save 10 Percent Around the House!
Follow the “10 percent rule” and save money. Find out how >>
